PRELUDE     Verset by Leon Boellmann

ADORATION

CALL TO WORSHIP (responsive)                             1 Cor. 1:17–18

We proclaim the message of the cross:

this is the wisdom and power of God.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Lord Jesus of fisher folk, You taught your disciples to cast a wide net — not for fish, but for people. Teach us the fishing craft. Make our fingers nimble so we may handle hearts and hands gently; make our minds quiet and patient while we wait for those who are not yet ready to receive you; and make our hearts hungry for your word, for the sake of the one who has captured our hearts already, Jesus Christ. Amen.

HYMN 371                       “Lift High the Cross”

Refrain:

Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim

Till all the world adore His sacred name.

  1. Come, Christians, follow where our Savior trod,

The Lamb victorious, Christ, the Son of God. (Refrain)

  1. Each newborn servant of the Crucified

Bears on the brow the seal of Christ who died. (Refrain)

    CALL TO CONFESSION

    SILENT CONFESSION

    PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)

Holy and merciful God, in your presence we confess our failure to be what you created us to be. You alone know how often we have sinned in wandering from your ways, in wasting your gifts, in forgetting your love. By your loving mercy, help us to live in your light and abide in your ways, for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior.

    PROCLAMATION

    FIRST LESSON                               Ephesians 3:7-13

Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God’s grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. I pray therefore that you may not lose heart over my sufferings for you; they are your glory.

    MESSAGE FOR THE CHILDREN

ANTHEM           “Lord, You Have Come To The Lakeshore”

                                                                                                                      Casareo Gabarain

    Lord, You have come to the lakeshore looking neither for wealthy non wise ones;

You only asked me to follow humbly.

O Lord, with Your eyes You have searched me, and, while smiling, have spoken my name.

Now my boat’s left on the shoreline behind me, by your side, I will seek other seas.

You, who have fished other oceans, ever longed for by souls that are waiting,

My loving friend, as thus You call me.

O Lord, with Your eyes You have searched me, and, while smiling, have spoken my name.

Now my boat’s left on the shoreline behind me, by your side, I will seek other seas.

    Second Lesson                                                                     Luke 5:1-11

Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God,  he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.” When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!” For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.” When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

SERMON       “To Come Along Side”            The Rev. Aaron Ochart

     RESPONSE

    AFFIRMATION OF FAITH                                             Apostles’ Creed

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.

    THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.  Amen

HYMN 434          “Today We All Are Called to Be Disciples”
    1. Today we are all called to be Disciples of the Lord,

To help to set the captives free, Make plow-share out of sword,

To feed the hungry, quench their thirst, Make love and peace our fast,

To serve the poor and homeless first, Our ease and comfort last.

    1. God made the world and at its birth Ordained our human race

To live as stewards of the earth, Responding to God’s grace.

But we are vain and sadly proud, We sow not peace but strife,

Our discord spreads a deadly cloud That threatens all of life.

    PARTING PRAYER                                                Maria Ware (1798)

Lord, hear; Lord, forgive; Lord do.

Hear what we speak not; forgive what we speak amiss; do what we leave undone; that not according to our words, or our deeds, but according to your mercy and truth, all may work for your glory, and the good of your kingdom, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
