✝PROCESSIONAL HYMN [*Blue #561] [GTG#337]

“My Country ‘Tis of Thee”

1 My country, ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing:

land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrims’ pride,

from every mountainside let freedom ring.

4 Our fathers’ God, to thee, author of liberty, to thee we sing.

Long may our land be bright with freedom’s holy light;

protect us by thy might, great God, our King.

CALL TO WORSHIP Matt. 10:40

ONE: Welcome one another in Jesus’ name,

MANY: for Christ is truly present among us.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

O God, light of the minds that know you, life of the souls that love you, strength of the thoughts that seek you: Help us so to know you that we may truly love you, so to love you that we may fully serve you, whose service is perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. ✝HYMN [*Blue #324] [GTG#451]

Open My Eyes, That I May See

1 Open my eyes, that I may see

glimpses of truth thou hast for me.

Place in my hands the wonderful key

that shall unclasp and set me free.

Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see.

Open my eyes; illumine me, Spirit divine!

2 Open my ears, that I may hear

voices of truth thou sendest clear.

And while the wave notes fall on my ear,

everything false will disappear.

Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see.

Open my ears; illumine me, Spirit divine!

3 Open my mouth, and let me bear

gladly the warm truth everywhere.

Open my heart, and let me prepare

love with thy children thus to share.

Silently now I wait for thee, ready, my God, thy will to see.

Open my heart; illumine me, Spirit divine!

THE WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE [Pew Bible OT 489 or 463}  Psalm 1

Happy are those

   who do not follow the advice of the wicked,

or take the path that sinners tread,

   or sit in the seat of scoffers;

but their delight is in the law of the Lord,

   and on his law they meditate day and night.

They are like trees

   planted by streams of water,

which yield their fruit in its season,

   and their leaves do not wither.

In all that they do, they prosper.

The wicked are not so,

   but are like chaff that the wind drives away.

Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgement,

   nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous;

for the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,

   but the way of the wicked will perish.

[Pew Bible OT #735 or #691]       Jeremiah 31:31-34

The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord’, for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

[Pew Bible NT #214 or #228] James 1:19-25

You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; for your anger does not produce God’s righteousness. Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls.

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act—they will be blessed in their doing.

SERMONStudying Scripture and the Issues of Christian Faith and Life”

        Rev. Aaron Ochart

 RESPONSE

✝AFFIRMATION OF FAITH          “A Brief Statement of Faith”- Jesus

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.

 We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

CONGREGATIONAL VITALITY RECOMMENDATIONS:  Are you interested in the topic of Church growth, and vitality? Are you concerned about the current trend of membership decline in the world wide church but don’t know what you can do here at JCPC to stem the tide and grow the church? This month we will be highlighting a few books on this crucial topic. We will have five book recommendations which can each be found at the PCUSA webstore or amazon. Many of these books even have discussion questions which would be perfect for a small group study, so grab a few friends and check out these books. Our first book recommendation is: The Welcoming Congregation: Roots and Fruits of Christian Hospitality By Henry G. Brinton: This practical book by pastor and writer Henry G. Brinton studies the biblical basis for Christian hospitality and how it is practiced in congregations today. While recognizing the challenges for embracing all people in the life of the church, Brinton offers a helpful guide for creating a hospitable congregation and welcoming others through spiritual formation, reconciliation, and outreach. He includes discussion questions and an action plan in each chapter.

“Because church members often have the aspiration to receive strangers but not the skills or techniques, I offer this book as a user-friendly and useful guide to Christian hospitality. It tells stories of inclusion, contains examples of the best practices of truly welcoming congregations from across the country and overseas, and offers suggestions about hospitable practices that can be used by churches across the social and theological spectrum. I offer this guide to laypersons, clergy, and other religious professionals because I am a parish pastor who believes that hospitality is the key to becoming an uncommon Christian community-one that embraces all people with God’s love and grace.” —From the introduction

GLASS RECYCLING: Ever wish you could recycle your glass jars instead of tossing them in the trash. Well you are in luck. Kelly and Sam are collecting glass to be recycled by the Glass Half Full, a company that recycles glass to be used as sand in duster relief and coastal restoration. Please make sure all glass is rinsed out with no lids and place it in the bin in the Choir Room.

PRAYER GROUPS: Our prayer groups will continue to meet in July, but before church instead of after. Each group will meet for about 15 min. The group leader will give a short lesson on prayer. Then the group will pray together for a specific area, ministry, or group of people. Sign up to be a leader or participant using the insert in the Bulletin. Place the insert in the offering plate or give it to Louise after the service.

VBS VOLUNTEERS: It’s Summer and that means VBS is right around the corner. We already have 26 kids signed up and hope to get more. As always we can’t do this wonderful program without lots of help. Please use the link, QR code, or insert in the bulletin to sign up to help. We would love to have anyone and everyone that wants to help, even if you can’t volunteer everyday. We are especially looking for group leaders, an adult activity leader (possible only two days), Bible/Story leader, Snacks coordinator and teens to help with the groups. Please use this link https://bit.ly/JCPCVBS23Volunteers  or the insert in the Bulletin to sign up to help.

YAV CLOSING WORSHIP, VOLUNTEER CLEANING DAY, WISHLIST: It’s Been a wonderful year but it’s time to say goodbye to our amazing YAV’s. ✝PROCESSIONAL HYMN [*Blue #403][GTG#465]

“What a Friend We Have in Jesus”

1 What a friend we have in Jesus,

all our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit;

O what needless pain we bear,

all because we do not carry

everything to God in prayer!

2 Have we trials and temptations?

Is there trouble anywhere?

We should never be discouraged;

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Can we find a friend so faithful

who will all our sorrows share?

Jesus knows our every weakness;

take it to the Lord in prayer!

3 Are we weak and heavy laden,

cumbered with a load of care?

Precious Savior, still our refuge;

take it to the Lord in prayer!

Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?

Take it to the Lord in prayer!

In his arms he’ll take and shield thee;

thou wilt find a solace there.

WORDS OF WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP Ps. 107:2, 31

ONE: Let the redeemed of the Lord rejoice;

MANY:for the steadfast love of God, give thanks!

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Teach us, good Lord, to serve you as you deserve;

to give and not to count the cost; to fight and not to heed the wounds; to toil and not to seek for rest; to labor and not to ask for any reward, save that of knowing that we do your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

✝HYMN [*Blue #438] [GTG#306]

“Blessed Be The Tie That Binds”

1 Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love.

The fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above.

2 Before our Father’s throne we pour our ardent prayers.

Our fears, our hopes, our aims are one,

our comforts and our cares.

3 We share our mutual woes; our mutual burdens bear.

And often for each other flows the sympathizing tear.

4 When we are called to part, it gives us inward pain;

but we shall still be joined in heart, and hope to meet again.

5 From sorrow, toil, and pain, and sin we shall be free;

and perfect love and friendship reign through all eternity.

THE WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE [Pew Bible OT 469 or 495}  Psalm 15

A Psalm of David.

O Lord, who may abide in your tent?

   Who may dwell on your holy hill?

Those who walk blamelessly, and do what is right,

   and speak the truth from their heart;

who do not slander with their tongue,

   and do no evil to their friends,

   nor take up a reproach against their neighbours;

in whose eyes the wicked are despised,

   but who honour those who fear the Lord;

who stand by their oath even to their hurt;

who do not lend money at interest,

   and do not take a bribe against the innocent.

Those who do these things shall never be moved.

[Pew Bible OT #319 or 334] 2 Kings 4:8-37

One day Elisha was passing through Shunem, where a wealthy woman lived, who urged him to have a meal. So whenever he passed that way, he would stop there for a meal. She said to her husband, ‘Look, I am sure that this man who regularly passes our way is a holy man of God. Let us make a small roof chamber with walls, and put there for him a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp, so that he can stay there whenever he comes to us.’

One day when he came there, he went up to the chamber and lay down there. He said to his servant Gehazi, ‘Call the Shunammite woman.’ When he had called her, she stood before him. He said to him, ‘Say to her, Since you have taken all this trouble for us, what may be done for you? Would you have a word spoken on your behalf to the king or to the commander of the army?’ She answered, ‘I live among my own people.’ He said, ‘What then may be done for her?’ Gehazi answered, ‘Well, she has no son, and her husband is old.’ He said, ‘Call her.’ When he had called her, she stood at the door. He said, ‘At this season, in due time, you shall embrace a son.’ She replied, ‘No, my lord, O man of God; do not deceive your servant.’

The woman conceived and bore a son at that season, in due time, as Elisha had declared to her.

When the child was older, he went out one day to his father among the reapers. He complained to his father, ‘Oh, my head, my head!’ The father said to his servant, ‘Carry him to his mother.’ He carried him and brought him to his mother; the child sat on her lap until noon, and he died. She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, closed the door on him, and left. Then she called to her husband, and said, ‘Send me one of the servants and one of the donkeys, so that I may quickly go to the man of God and come back again.’ He said, ‘Why go to him today? It is neither new moon nor sabbath.’ She said, ‘It will be all right.’ Then she saddled the donkey and said to her servant, ‘Urge the animal on; do not hold back for me unless I tell you.’ So she set out, and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel.

When the man of God saw her coming, he said to Gehazi his servant, ‘Look, there is the Shunammite woman; run at once to meet her, and say to her, Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is the child all right?’ She answered, ‘It is all right.’ When she came to the man of God at the mountain, she caught hold of his feet. Gehazi approached to push her away. But the man of God said, ‘Let her alone, for she is in bitter distress; the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me.’ Then she said, ‘Did I ask my lord for a son? Did I not say, Do not mislead me?’ He said to Gehazi, ‘Gird up your loins, and take my staff in your hand, and go. If you meet anyone, give no greeting, and if anyone greets you, do not answer; and lay my staff on the face of the child.’ Then the mother of the child said, ‘As the Lord lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave without you.’ So he rose up and followed her. Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the face of the child, but there was no sound or sign of life. He came back to meet him and told him, ‘The child has not awakened.’

When Elisha came into the house, he saw the child lying dead on his bed. So he went in and closed the door on the two of them, and prayed to the Lord. Then he got up on the bed and lay upon the child, putting his mouth upon his mouth, his eyes upon his eyes, and his hands upon his hands; and while he lay bent over him, the flesh of the child became warm. He got down, walked once to and fro in the room, then got up again and bent over him; the child sneezed seven times, and the child opened his eyes. Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, ‘Call the Shunammite woman.’ So he called her. When she came to him, he said, ‘Take your son.’ She came and fell at his feet, bowing to the ground; then she took her son and left.

[Pew Bible NT #163 or 174] 1 Corinthians 12:12-13:7

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Indeed, the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot were to say, ‘Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear were to say, ‘Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body’, that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole body were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many members, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, ‘I have no need of you’, nor again the head to the feet, ‘I have no need of you.’ On the contrary, the members of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and those members of the body that we think less honourable we clothe with greater honour, and our less respectable members are treated with greater respect; whereas our more respectable members do not need this. But God has so arranged the body, giving the greater honour to the inferior member, that there may be no dissension within the body, but the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together with it; if one member is honored, all rejoice together with it.

Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But strive for the greater gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way.

If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

SERMON “Lifting One Another Up in Prayer, Mutual Concern, and Active Support” Rev. Ochart

 RESPONSE

✝AFFIRMATION OF FAITH        “A Brief Statement of Faith”- Spirit

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.

We trust in God the Holy Spirit everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!”

With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

LGBTQIA+ READING RECOMMENDATIONS: June is PRIDE month. Which makes it a great time to further our understanding of our LGBTQIA siblings, celebrate diversity within the church and affirm our commitment to love and welcome all into our church. Each week we will have a book recommendation to help you on this journey. This week’s book is: UnClobber: Expanded Edition with Study Guide: Rethinking Our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality by Colby Martin. Armed with only six passages in the Bible―often known as the “Clobber Passages”―there has been a faction in the church whose position has been one that stands against the full inclusion of our LGBTQ siblings. UnClobber reexamines each of those frequently quoted passages of Scripture, alternating with author Colby Martin’s own story of being fired from an evangelical megachurch when they discovered his stance on sexuality. UnClobber reexamines what the Bible says (and does not say) about homosexuality in such a way that sheds divine light on outdated and inaccurate assumptions and interpretations. This new edition equips study groups and congregations with questions for discussion and a sermon series guide for preachers.

PROGRAM OF HOPE: It is our turn again to provide lunch!  POH is up and running, and doing so much more with every month. We have 4 weeks this time.  June 21, and 27.  We need help every Wednesday. With a special performance, training on how to administer Narcan for the volunteer, and giving out all that clothing we collected we have a lot going on. Please see Sharon Fortin or Richard Britson for more information.

OPINIONS NEEDED: Please see the insert in the Bulletin and let us know what kind of classes, activities or events you would like to see us organize. Place your insert in the offering plate. We can’t wait to hear from you!

PRAYER GROUPS: This summer we will be starting small prayer groups. These groups will meet after church in June and before church in July. Each group will meet for about 15 min. The group leader will give a short lesson on prayer. Then the group will pray together for a specific area, ministry, or group of people. Sign up to be a leader or participant in using the insert in the Bulletin. Place the insert in the offering plate or give it to Louise after the service. Join us after the service even if you didn’t sign up. We will be praying for the men of the Church.

CAMP AGAPE: Pastor Aaron and Louise will be out of town this week taking several kids to Camp Agape. Please keep everyone in your prayers as they embark on this fun week. The office will be closed while they are away.

PRELUDE

✝PROCESSIONAL HYMN [*Blue #398][GTG#408]

“There’s A Sweet Sweet Spirit”

  1. There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place,

And I know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord;

There are sweet expressions on each face,

And I know that it’s the presence of the Lord.

Chorus: Sweet Holy Spirit, Sweet heavenly dove,

Stay right here with us, filling us with Your love;

And for these blessings we lift our hearts in praise

Without a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived,

When we shall leave this place.

  1. There are blessings you cannot receive,

‘Till you know Him in His fullness and believe;

You’re the one to profit when you say,

“I am going to walk with Jesus all the way.” (Chorus)

WORDS OF WELCOME

ADORATION

CALL TO WORSHIP Mark 4:31–32

ONE: The kingdom of God is like a tiny mustard seed;

MANY: it grows into a great plant with many branches.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

All-powerful God, in Jesus Christ you turned death into life,

and defeat into victory. Increase our faith and trust in him,

that we may triumph over all evil, in the strength of the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

✝HYMN [*Blue #461] [GTG#409]  “God is Here!”

1 God is here! As we your people

meet to offer praise and prayer,

may we find in fuller measure

what it is in Christ we share.

Here, as in the world around us,

all our varied skills and arts

wait the coming of the Spirit

into open minds and hearts.

2 Here are symbols to remind us

of our lifelong need of grace;

here are table, font, and pulpit;

here the cross has central place.

Here in honesty of preaching,

here in silence, as in speech,

here, in newness and renewal,

God the Spirit comes to each.

3 Here our children find a welcome

in the Shepherd’s flock and fold;

here as bread and wine are taken,

Christ sustains us as of old.

Here the servants of the Servant

seek in worship to explore

what it means in daily living

to believe and to adore.

4 Lord of all, of church and kingdom,

in an age of change and doubt

keep us faithful to the gospel;

help us work your purpose out.

Here, in this day’s dedication,

all we have to give, receive:

we, who cannot live without you,

we adore you! We believe!

MESSAGE FOR THE CHILDREN

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of grace, love, and communion, we confess that we have failed to love you with all our heart, soul, and mind; and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We ignore your commandments, stray from your way, and follow other gods. Have mercy on us. Forgive our sin and raise us to new life that we may serve you faithfully and give honor to your holy name. THE WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE [Pew Bible OT 597 or 635}  Isaiah 6:1-13

In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, high and lofty; and the hem of his robe filled the temple. Seraphs were in attendance above him; each had six wings: with two they covered their faces, and with two they covered their feet, and with two they flew. And one called to another and said:

‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts;

the whole earth is full of his glory.’

The pivots on the thresholds shook at the voices of those who called, and the house filled with smoke. And I said: ‘Woe is me! I am lost, for I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips; yet my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!’

Then one of the seraphs flew to me, holding a live coal that had been taken from the altar with a pair of tongs. The seraph touched my mouth with it and said: ‘Now that this has touched your lips, your guilt has departed and your sin is blotted out.’ Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I; send me!’ And he said, ‘Go and say to this people:

“Keep listening, but do not comprehend;

keep looking, but do not understand.”

Make the mind of this people dull,

   and stop their ears,

   and shut their eyes,

so that they may not look with their eyes,

   and listen with their ears,

and comprehend with their minds,

   and turn and be healed.’

Then I said, ‘How long, O Lord?’ And he said:

‘Until cities lie waste

   without inhabitant,

and houses without people,

   and the land is utterly desolate;

until the Lord sends everyone far away,

   and vast is the emptiness in the midst of the land.

Even if a tenth part remains in it,

   it will be burned again,

like a terebinth or an oak

   whose stump remains standing

   when it is felled.’

The holy seed is its stump.

[Pew Bible NT #210 or 224] Hebrews 10:19-25

Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

[Pew Bible NT #233 or 248] Revelation 5:6-14

Then I saw between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders a Lamb standing as if it had been slaughtered, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. He went and took the scroll from the right hand of the one who was seated on the throne. When he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell before the Lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. They sing a new song:

‘You are worthy to take the scroll

   and to open its seals,

for you were slaughtered and by your blood you ransomed for God

   saints from every tribe and language and people and nation;

you have made them to be a kingdom and priests serving our God,

   and they will reign on earth.’

Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels surrounding the throne and the living creatures and the elders; they numbered myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands, singing with full voice,

‘Worthy is the Lamb that was slaughtered

to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might

and honour and glory and blessing!’

Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea, and all that is in them, singing,

‘To the one seated on the throne and to the Lamb

be blessing and honour and glory and might

for ever and ever!’

And the four living creatures said, ‘Amen!’ And the elders fell down and worshipped.

✝AFFIRMATION OF FAITH        “A Brief Statement of Faith”- God

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.

We trust in God, whom Jesus called Abba, Father. In sovereign love God created the world good and makes everyone equally in God’s image, male and female, of every race and people, to live as one community. But we rebel against God; we hide from our Creator. Ignoring God’s commandments. W violate the image of God in others and ourselves, accept lies as truth, exploit neighbor and nature, and threaten death to the planet entrusted to our care. We deserve God’s condemnation. Yet God acts with justice and mercy to redeem creation. In everlasting love, the God of Abraham and Sarah chose a covenant people to bless all families of the earth. Hearing their cry, God delivered the children of Israel from the house of bondage. Loving us still, God makes us heirs with Christ of the covenant. Like a mother who will not forsake her nursing child, like a father who runs to welcome the prodigal home, God is faithful still.

With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

✝HYMN [*Blue #429] [GTG#298]

Lord, You Give the Great Commission ABBOT’S LEIGH

1 Lord, you give the great commission:

“Heal the sick and preach the word.”

Lest the church neglect its mission, and the gospel go unheard,

help us witness to your purpose with renewed integrity:

with the Spirit’s gifts empower us for the work of ministry.

2 Lord, you call us to your service:

“In my name baptize and teach.”

That the world may trust your promise,

life abundant meant for each,

give us all new fervor, draw us closer in community:

with the Spirit’s gifts empower us for the work of ministry.

3 Lord, you make the common holy:

“This, my body; this, my blood.”

asking that the world around us share your children’s liberty:

with the Spirit’s gifts empower us for the work of ministry.

4 Lord, you show us love’s true measure:

“Father, what they do, forgive.”

Yet we hoard as private treasure all that you so freely give.

May your care and mercy lead us to a just society:

with the Spirit’s gifts empower us for the work of ministry.

5 Lord, you bless with words assuring: “I am with you to the end.”

Faith and hope and love restoring, may we serve as you intend,

and, amid the cares that claim us, hold in mind eternity:

with the Spirit’s gifts empower us for the work of ministry.

THE WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE [Pew Bible OT 683 or 642}  Isaiah 52:3-12

For thus says the Lord: You were sold for nothing, and you shall be redeemed without money. For thus says the Lord God: Long ago, my people went down into Egypt to reside there as aliens; the Assyrian, too, has oppressed them without cause. Now therefore, what am I doing here, says the Lord, seeing that my people are taken away without cause? Their rulers howl, says the Lord, and continually, all day long, my name is despised. Therefore my people shall know my name; therefore on that day they shall know that it is I who speak; here am I.

How beautiful upon the mountains

   are the feet of the messenger who announces peace,

who brings good news,

   who announces salvation,

   who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’

Listen! Your sentinels lift up their voices,

   together they sing for joy;

for in plain sight they see

   the return of the Lord to Zion.

Break forth together into singing,

   you ruins of Jerusalem;

for the Lord has comforted his people,

   he has redeemed Jerusalem.

The Lord has bared his holy arm

   before the eyes of all the nations;

and all the ends of the earth shall see

   the salvation of our God.

Depart, depart, go out from there!

   Touch no unclean thing;

go out from the midst of it, purify yourselves,

   you who carry the vessels of the Lord.

For you shall not go out in haste,

   and you shall not go in flight;

for the Lord will go before you,

   and the God of Israel will be your rearguard.

Matthew 28:16-20 [Pew Bible #32 or 34]

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION

✝HYMN [*Blue #563] [GTG#339]  “Lift Every Voice and Sing”

  1. Lift every voice and sing till earth and heaven ring,

ring with the harmonies of liberty.

Let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies;

let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us;

sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

let us march on, till victory is won.

  1. Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,

felt in the days when hope unborn had died.

Yet, with a steady beat, have not our weary feet

come to the place for which our parents sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered;

we have come, treading the path

through the blood of the slaughtered,

out of the gloomy past, till now we stand at last

where the white gleam of our bright star is cast.

  1. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,

thou who hast brought us thus far on the way;

thou who hast by thy might led us into the light,

keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee;

lest our hearts drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee;

shadowed beneath thy hand may we forever stand,

true to our God, true to our native land.

✝PARTING PRAYER

Grant unto us, O God, the fullness of your promises.

where we have been weak, grant us your strength;

where we have been confused, grant us your guidance;

where we have been distraught, grant us your comfort;

where we have been dead, grant us your life.

READING RECOMMENDATIONS:  Selfless: Becoming Christ-Centered in a Self-Centered World. None of us think we are self-centered; we know for a fact that our friends, spouses, and neighbors are selfish. But not ME! This very thought is a clue that we are the one that needs to change the central focus of our lives-away from ME and onto HIM! In the process of becoming Selfless you will come face to face with the reality that we all are carriers of this trait. We are allowing this sin to infiltrate every area of our lives. We are the ones responsible for allowing our self to stifle our purpose and the joy of fulfilling His plan in our lives and in our culture. We have made this life and this world about us, not about HIM. • Self less is a call to action; it begins with you and me • Self less will empower you to fulfill your calling • Self less men and women will develop into Self less families • Selfless churches will finally have the growth that they are seeking. Cultures change and nations change when we as individuals change. You will not be satisfied with your life as you know it. You will recognize the lies and the defeat of your previous perspective. You will never return to your self-centered self. YOU won’t be there!

A Time to Embrace: Same-Gender Relationships in Religion, Law, and Politics William Stacy Johnson As rhetoric continues to heat up on both sides of the debate over same-gender unions, clearly reasoned statements are in short supply. Watching this debate unfold, William Stacy Johnson found that he could be silent no longer. The result is this finely honed book.In A Time to Embrace Johnson presents a brilliant analysis of the religious, legal, and political stakes in the debates over gay marriage, civil unions, and the place of committed gay couples in a democratic society. Carefully weighing the pros and cons from across the moral and religious spectrum, Johnson here offers a fresh, thought-provoking examination of one of the most controversial issues in the West today.

OPINIONS NEEDED: Please see the insert in the Bulletin and let us know what kind of classes, activities or events you would like to see us organize. Place your insert in the offering plate or give it to Louise at the end of the service.

Sign up for one Sunday or a few, it’s up to you. Place the insert in the offering plate or give it to Louise after the service.

REPENTANCE

CALL TO CONFESSION   John 3:16

For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but have eternal life.                      Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin first silently and then together.

SILENT CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of grace, love, and communion, we confess that we have failed to love you with all our heart, soul, and mind; and to love our neighbor as ourselves. We ignore your commandments, stray from your way, and follow other gods. Have mercy on us. Forgive our sin and raise us to new life that we may serve you faithfully and give honor to your holy name. Amen

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

God did not send the Son to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

✝GLORIA PATRI [*Blue#579[ [GTG#581]

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

THE WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE [Pew Bible NT #9]                         Matthew 9:35-38

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.’

ONE: The Word of the Lord

MANY: Thanks be to God

SERMON                             “Selflessness”                           Mike Isham

 RESPONSE

✝AFFIRMATION OF FAITH             Confession of Belhar

We believe that God has entrusted the church with the message of reconciliation in and through Jesus Christ;

that the church is called to be the salt of the earth and the light of the world, that the church is called blessed because it is a peacemaker, that the church is witness both by word and by deed to the new heaven and the new earth in which righteousness dwells…

that the credibility of this message is seriously affected and its beneficial work obstructed when it is proclaimed in a land which professes to be Christian, but in which the enforced separation of people on a racial basis promotes and perpetuates alienation, hatred and enmity…

Therefore, we reject any doctrine which, in such a situation sanctions in the name of the gospel or of the will of God the forced separation of people on the grounds of race and color and thereby in advance obstructs and weakens the ministry and experience of reconciliation in Christ.

PROCLAMATION

FIRST LESSON [Pew Bible NT 119 or 111]             Acts 2:1-13

When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability.

Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’

MEDITATION “Breaking Bread as Followers of Christ.”

Caroline Kothari

Second Lesson [ Pew Bible NT 148 or 158]         Romans 8:14-17

(BHTI)

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’ it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. (NRSV)

Refrain: Spirit Spirit of gentleness Blow through the wilderness

Calling and free, Spirit Spirit of restlessness

Stir me from placidness Wind wind on the sea

Then You coaxed up the mountains From the valleys of sleep

And over the eons You called to each thing

Awake from your slumbers And rise on your wings (Refrain)

And You goaded Your people With a law and a land

And when they were blinded With their idols and lies

DEVOTIONAL RECOMMENDATIONS: Pentecost: This Story is Our Story: Robert Menzies lays out clear, compelling, and concise truths about the relevance of the Pentecostal experience for Christ’s followers today, tomorrow, and the day after that. He does not agonize over whether this experience is right or wrong…he explains simply and clearly that the story of Pentecost found in the book of Acts is the story of every believer. With a keen intellectual presentation that is both informative and intriguing, he explains that Pentecostalism is Christ-centered and Bible-based. It is the model for the mission of the church.
