✝PROCESSIONAL HYMN GTG#401 Here in This Place

Those who have tone chimes are encouraged to ring them throughout this hymn!

1 Here in this place the new light is streaming; now is the darkness banished away;
see in this space our fears and our dreamings  brought here to you in the light of this day.
Gather us in, the lost and forsaken; gather us in, the blind and the lame;
call to us know, and we shall awaken; we shall arise at the sound of our name.

2 We are the young, our lives are a mystery. We are the old who yearn for your face.
We have been sung throughout all of history, called to be light to the whole human race.
Gather us in, the rich and the haughty; gather us in, the proud and the strong;
give us a heart, so meek and so lowly; give us the courage to enter the song.

4 Not in the dark of buildings confining, not in some heaven lightyears away:
here in this place the new light is shining; now is the kingdom, and now is the day.
Gather us in and hold us forever; gather us in and make us your own;
gather us in, all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bones.

WORDS OF WELCOME

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ADORATION

CALL TO WORSHIP                 Luke 15:9–10

ONE: Rejoice with me! The lost are found.

MANY: There is joy in the presence of God.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

Almighty God,

you call your church to witness that in Christ we are reconciled to you. Help us so to proclaim the good news of your love, that all who hear it may turn to you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

✝HYMN  [GTG#487] These Treasured Children

Those who have tone chimes are encouraged to ring them throughout this hymn!

1 These treasured children present now are bound to us by sacred vow:

with love, we make a heartfelt claim to welcome them in Jesus’ name.

2 Our ancient story we shall tell, till these our children know it well

within their souls and minds and hearts, for this is where their

journey starts.

3 We long to trust as children do and so entrust our days to you;

in their young lives we clearly see a lesson in humility.

4 Come, Holy Spirit, help us be a nurturing community;

empower us to realize God’s kingdom through our children’s eyes.

5 Then, tender God, each child embrace; God give them blessings, grant them grace.  Surprise them, God, with wonders still,

and gently guide them to your will.

REPENTANCE

CALL TO CONFESSION

SILENT CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O Lord our God, you call us to work for a world where all will be fed and have dignity, but we find ourselves distracted by our own desires. You call us to seek justice and peace, but we are satisfied with injustice and discord. You call us to bring liberty to the oppressed, but we do not insist on freedom for all. Forgive us, O Lord. Turn us to your will by the power of your Spirit, so that all may know your justice and peace; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Savior.

ASSURANCE OF PARDON

✝GLORIA PATRI [Blue#579[ [GTG581]

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;

As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,

world without end. Amen.

THE WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE                    Psalm 19:1-4; 14

The heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims his handiwork.

Day to day pours forth speech, and night to night declares knowledge.

There is no speech, nor are there words; their voice is not heard;

yet their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In the heavens he has set a tent for the sun,

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

SCRIPTURE                        Mark 8:27-38

Jesus went on with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” And they answered him, “John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” He asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” And he sternly ordered them not to tell anyone about him.

Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”

ONE: The Word of the Lord

MANY: Thanks be to God

SERMON:             “Hearing the Silence”Rev. Dr. Martha Robson

✝AFFIRMATION OF FAITH         Apostles’ Creed

I BELIEVE in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth,  and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

1 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee.

Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

2 Holy, holy, holy! all the saints adore thee,

casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;

Cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,

who wert, and art, and evermore shalt be.

4 Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!

All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea.

Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

✝RESPONSE GTG#765 May the God of Hope Go with Us/Canto de esperanza

May the God of hope go with us every day, filling all our lives with love and joy and peace.

May the God of justice speed us on our way,

bringing light and hope to every land and race.

Praying, let us work for peace; singing, share our joy with all;

working for a world that’s new, faithful when we hear Christ’s call.

SPANISH:

¡Dios de la esperanza, danos gozo y paz!

Al mundo en crisis, habla tu verdad.

Dios de la justicia, mándanos tu luz,

luz y esperanza en la oscuridad.

Luchemos por la paz, fieles a ti, Señor.
