✝PROCESSIONAL HYMN [GTG#336]“We Gather Together!”

1 We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;

the wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.

Sing praises to his name; he forgets not his own.

2 Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,

ordaining, maintaining his kingdom divine;

so from the beginning the fight we were winning;

thou, Lord, was at our side; all glory be thine!

THE WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE [Pew Bible OT 525 or 555]          Psalm 104:24-35

O LORD, how manifold are your works!

   In wisdom you have made them all;

   the earth is full of your creatures.

Yonder is the sea, great and wide,

   creeping things innumerable are there,

   living things both small and great.

There go the ships,

   and Leviathan that you formed to sport in it.

These all look to you

   to give them their food in due season;

when you give to them, they gather it up;

   when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

When you hide your face, they are dismayed;

   when you take away their breath, they die

   and return to their dust.

When you send forth your spirit, they are created;

   and you renew the face of the ground.

May the glory of the LORD endure for ever;

   may the LORD rejoice in his works—

who looks on the earth and it trembles,

   who touches the mountains and they smoke.

I will sing to the LORD as long as I live;

   I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

May my meditation be pleasing to him,

   for I rejoice in the LORD.

Let sinners be consumed from the earth,

   and let the wicked be no more.

Bless the LORD, O my soul.

Praise the LORD!

[Pew Bible OT #2]               Genesis 2:4b-17

In the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up—for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no one to till the ground; but a stream would rise from the earth, and water the whole face of the ground— then the LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being. And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. Out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

A river flows out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides and becomes four branches. The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; and the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, ‘You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.’

[Pew Bible NT #148 or 158]         Romans 8:18-25

I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

✝AFFIRMATION OF FAITH         “A Brief Statement of Faith”- Spirit

In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.

We trust in God the Holy Spirit everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God’s new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!

With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen

Announcement 8-13-23

Announcements:

Books on being Presbyterian: Would you like to get more familiar with the Presbyterian Churches beliefs? Do you have questions about our reformed tradition? Well you’re in luck because this month the Christian Education recommended reading list is all about what it means to be a Presbyterian. We are bringing you a list of four books that can help deepen your understanding of what it means to be a Presbyterian. This week’s recommendation is: Presbyterian Beliefs, Revised Edition By Donald K. McKim This book is a clear introduction to the major beliefs of Presbyterians. Donald McKim describes in easy-to- understand language what Presbyterians believe about key Reformed theological topics.

The revised edition has been updated to include recent changes in the new Form of Government and the Confession of Belhar, among others. Ideal for personal and group study in churches, Presbyterian Beliefs includes ten unique case studies and questions for considering how to apply Presbyterian beliefs to church and daily life.

CHOIR IS BACK: Choir rehearsals continue this Sunday. Rehearsals will continue to be on Sundays after services and will finish no later than 1pm every week. We’ll start singing in services again on September 10th, the Sunday after Labor Day weekend. We would love to have you join us. Please see Kelly Cuppett for more information.

SAINTS and POTLUCKS: We are looking at scheduling Saints game potlucks for the noon games in Sept. and October. These events would be very easy with set-up and clean-up being done by those enjoying the game and taking place the day of the game. Those interested in participating would bring a dish to share and then head over to the fellowship hall after church to set up tables, chairs, potluck and watch the game. After the game those involved would clean up. Louise can help set up activities for kids as well. We would love to find a sports enthusiast to head up these events. Please see Louise if you are interested.

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES: We will be starting adult Sunday school in September. This year the CE Committee would like to try something new. We would like to offer several short classes taught by a variety of people. If you have ever thought about teaching a bible study but didn’t want to make a long term commitment this is for you. Choose a book, a study, or a topic you are interested in teaching and sign up using the insert in the bulletin or speak with Louise.

RESTOCK THE CLOSET:

The food pantry has been used quite a bit recently and we are running low on small Toiletries, and diapers both adult and child sizes. We would love some help restocking. Shelf stable food items are also always appreciated.

WORDS OF WELCOME

ADORATION

CALL TO WORSHIP           Micah 6:8 (MESSAGE)

ONE: God has already made it plain how to live, what to do, what GOD is looking for in men and women.

MANY: It’s quite simple. Do what is fair and just to your neighbor, be compassionate and loyal in your love, and don’t take yourself too seriously- take God seriously.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

God of the oppressed. You call us to righteousness in our relationships, to treat you, our friends, our family, and complete strangers well. You call us to justice, to be fair in our practices, and to treat everyone with equity. You call us to humility, not thinking of ourselves as better than others. You call us to work in the world for peace, justice, freedom, and human fulfillment. Help us to lives lives worthy of your gospel. In the name of Jesus Chirst, our Lord. Amen.

✝HYMN [BLUE #563] [GTG #339]

“Lift Every Voice and Sing”

1 Lift every voice and sing till earth and heaven ring,

ring with the harmonies of liberty.

Let our rejoicing rise high as the listening skies;

let it resound loud as the rolling sea.

Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us;

sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us.

Facing the rising sun of our new day begun,

let us march on, till victory is won.

2 Stony the road we trod, bitter the chastening rod,

felt in the days when hope unborn had died.

Yet with a steady beat, have not our weary feet

come to the place for which our parents sighed?

We have come over a way that with tears has been watered;

we have come, treading our path

through the blood of the slaughtered,

out of the gloomy past, till now we stand at last

where the white gleam of our bright star has cast.

3 God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,

thou who has brought us thus far on the way;

thou who hast by thy might led us into the light,

keep us forever in the path, we pray.

Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met thee;

lest, our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget thee;

shadowed beneath thy hand may we forever stand,

true to our God, true to our native land.

MESSAGE FOR THE CHILDREN

THE WORD READ AND PROCLAIMED

SCRIPTURE [Pew Bible NT 53 or 57]  Luke 1:46-55

And Mary said,

‘My soul magnifies the Lord,

   and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,

for he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant.

   Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;

for the Mighty One has done great things for me,

   and holy is his name.

His mercy is for those who fear him

   from generation to generation.

He has shown strength with his arm;

   he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.

He has brought down the powerful from their thrones,

   and lifted up the lowly;

he has filled the hungry with good things,

   and sent the rich away empty.

He has helped his servant Israel,

   in remembrance of his mercy,

according to the promise he made to our ancestors,

   to Abraham and to his descendants for ever.’

[Pew Bible OT #816 or 866] Micah 6:1 – 7:7

Hear what the Lord says:

   Rise, plead your case before the mountains,

   and let the hills hear your voice.

Hear, you mountains, the controversy of the Lord,

   and you enduring foundations of the earth;

for the Lord has a controversy with his people,

   and he will contend with Israel.

‘O my people, what have I done to you?

   In what have I wearied you? Answer me!

For I brought you up from the land of Egypt,

   and redeemed you from the house of slavery;

and I sent before you Moses,

   Aaron, and Miriam.

O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised,

   what Balaam son of Beor answered him,

and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal,

   that you may know the saving acts of the Lord.’

‘With what shall I come before the Lord,

   and bow myself before God on high?

Shall I come before him with burnt-offerings,

   with calves a year old?

Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,

   with tens of thousands of rivers of oil?

Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression,

   the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?’

He has told you, O mortal, what is good;

   and what does the Lord require of you

but to do justice, and to love kindness,

   and to walk humbly with your God?

The voice of the Lord cries to the city

   (it is sound wisdom to fear your name):

Hear, O tribe and assembly of the city!

   Can I forget the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked,

   and the scant measure that is accursed?

Can I tolerate wicked scales

   and a bag of dishonest weights?

Your wealthy are full of violence;

   your inhabitants speak lies,

   with tongues of deceit in their mouths.

Therefore I have begun to strike you down,

   making you desolate because of your sins.

You shall eat, but not be satisfied,

   and there shall be a gnawing hunger within you;

you shall put away, but not save,

   and what you save, I will hand over to the sword.

You shall sow, but not reap;

   you shall tread olives, but not anoint yourselves with oil;

   you shall tread grapes, but not drink wine.

For you have kept the statutes of Omri

   and all the works of the house of Ahab,

   and you have followed their counsels.

Therefore I will make you a desolation, and your inhabitants an object of hissing;

   so you shall bear the scorn of my people.

Woe is me! For I have become like one who,

   after the summer fruit has been gathered,

   after the vintage has been gleaned,

finds no cluster to eat;

   there is no first-ripe fig for which I hunger.

The faithful have disappeared from the land,

   and there is no one left who is upright;

they all lie in wait for blood,

   and they hunt each other with nets.

Their hands are skilled to do evil;

   the official and the judge ask for a bribe,

and the powerful dictate what they desire;

   thus they pervert justice.

The best of them is like a brier,

   the most upright of them a thorn hedge.

The day of their sentinels, of their punishment, has come;

   now their confusion is at hand.

Put no trust in a friend,

   have no confidence in a loved one;

guard the doors of your mouth

   from her who lies in your embrace;

for the son treats the father with contempt,

   the daughter rises up against her mother,

the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;

   your enemies are members of your own household.

But as for me, I will look to the Lord,

   I will wait for the God of my salvation;

   my God will hear me.

We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.

With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen
