MORNING WORSHIP
July 5, 2020
5th Sunday of Pentecost
10:30 A.M.
Welcome to John Calvin Presbyterian Church!
When we worship, we offer ourselves fully to God, praising God’s name, asking God’s forgiveness, seeking God’s Word, and opening ourselves to God’s direction for our lives.
We are glad you are here. Let us worship the living God!

ADORATION
CALL TO WORSHIP
L: Weeping may linger for the night,
P: but joy comes in the morning.
PRAYER OF THE DAY (responsive)
God of the covenant, in our baptism you called us to proclaim the coming of your kingdom. Give us courage like you gave the apostles, that we may faithfully witness to your love and peace in every circumstance of life, in the name of Jesus Christ our redeemer, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.
Amen.
HYMN 302 “I Danced in the Morning.” Simple Gifts
I danced in the morning
when the world was begun,
and I danced in the moon
and the stars and the sun,
and I came down from heaven
and I danced on the earth,
at Bethlehem
I had my birth.
Refrain:
Dance, then, wherever you may be,
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
and I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
I danced for the scribe
and the pharisee,
but they would not dance
and they wouldn’t follow me.
I danced for the fishermen,
for James and John –
they came with me
and the dance went on.
Refrain:
Dance, then, wherever you may be,
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
and I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
and I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
CONFESSION
CALL TO CONFESSION
The proof of God’s amazing love is this: While we were still sinners Christ died for us. Because we have faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION (unison)
Merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart and mind and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. In your mercy, forgive what we have been, help us amend what we are, and direct what we shall be, that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways to the glory of your holy name. Amen
SILENT CONFESSION
KYRIE 572 John Merbecke
ASSURANCE OF PARDON:
Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; the new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.
PROCLAMATION
FIRST LESSON Romans 7:15-25
I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me.
So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
So then, with my mind I am a slave to the law of God, but with my flesh I am a slave to the law of sin.
L: The Word of the Lord.
P: Thanks be to God.
MESSAGE FOR THE CHILDREN
RESPONSIVE PSALM 145
I will exalt you, my God and king,
and bless your name forever and ever.
Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
Great is the LORD and greatly to be praised!
There is no end to your greatness.
One generation shall praise your works to another
and shall declare your power.
I will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty
and all your marvelous works.
They shall tell of your wondrous acts,
and I will recount your greatness.
They shall publish the remembrance of your great goodness;
they shall sing joyfully of your righteousness.
The LORD is gracious and full of compassion,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
LORD, you are good to all,
and your compassion is over all your works.
All your works shall praise you, O LORD,
and your faithful ones shall bless you.
They shall tell of the glory of your kingdom
and speak of your power,
that all people may know of your power
and the glorious splendor of your kingdom.
Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom;
your dominion endures throughout all ages.
You, LORD, are faithful in all your words,
and loving in all your works.
The LORD upholds all those who fall
and lifts up those who are bowed down.
SECOND LESSON Matthew 11: 16-30
we wailed, and you did not mourn.’For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
L: The Word of the Lord.
P: Thanks be to God.
SERMON “2020 Vision” The Reverend Aaron Ochart
RESPONSE
THE SACRAMENT OF THE HOLY COMMUNION
Invitation to the Lord’s Table
The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
Holy God, Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, with joy we praise you and give thanks to your name…
Therefore we lift up our hearts in joyful praise, joining our voices with choirs of angels, and with all the faithful of every time and place, who forever sing to the glory of your name:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest…
Great is the mystery of faith:
Christ has died,
Christ has risen,
HYMN 563 “Lift Every Voice and Sing” (Instrumental only) Lift Every Voice
1 Lift ev’ry voice and sing,
Till earth and heaven ring,
Ring with the harmonies of liberty;
Let our rejoicing rise
High as the list’ning skies,
Let it resound loud as the rolling sea.
Sing a song full of the faith
that the dark past has taught us;
Sing a song full of the hope
that the present has brought us;
Facing the rising sun
Of our new day begun,
Let us march on till victory is won.
2 Stony the road we trod,
Bitter the chast’ning rod,
Felt in the days when hope unborn had died;
Yet with a steady beat,
Have not our weary feet
Come to the place for which our people sighed?
We have come over a way
that with tears has been watered;
We have come, treading our path
through the blood of the slaughtered;
Out from the gloomy past,
Till now we stand at last
Where the bright gleam of our bright star is cast.
PARTING PRAYER
God most compassionate and merciful, we thank you that you have come to us in Jesus Christ, whose disciples we are. Make us strong in your strength; make us wise in your wisdom; and make us gentle in your compassion. May we be signs of the human unity you seek to accomplish through the cross of Jesus Christ, that your name may be glorified in all the earth.
Amen.
